Green Mapping with the VPSN

Pedestrian City, in collaboration with the Vancouver Public Space Network’s Mapping & Wayfinding group, engaged Vancouver residents in the creation of green maps.

The City of Vancouver states that “greenness” is a key to our collective identity and that we live in a green paradise. In response, the VPSN initiated a Green Map -style inventory to help them advocate for public “green” space within the City. A Green Map can “create perspective-changing community ‘portraits’ which act as comprehensive inventories for decision-making and as practical guides for residents and tourists.”

Several sesisons took place at the Toast Collective in October and November 2009, where participants drew memory maps to discover the local public spaces that matter to them. The goal is to eventually include these spaces on the VPSN’s official green maps of Vancouver.
